What is a security fog system and how does it work?
Security fog is a technology that does not merely report a burglary — it prevents one. This guide covers how the system works, what it is made of, and how it differs from a conventional alarm.
The short definition
A security fog system is an active security device that fills a protected volume with dense fog within seconds of an unauthorised entry being detected. Its purpose is not to catch or identify the intruder, but to make reaching the target physically impossible. Once visibility drops to a matter of centimetres, the attacker can neither find what they came for nor move safely through the space.
The industry calls this an "active measure". Cameras and alarms record or report the event — they are passive. Security fog changes the outcome of the event itself.
How the system works
1. Trigger
The fog generator is wired to your existing alarm panel. When the panel produces a verified alarm condition — usually two independent detectors agreeing — a trigger signal is sent to the generator. This verification layer prevents a single faulty sensor reading from discharging the system.
2. Heating and vaporisation
Inside the unit is a heat exchanger that is kept permanently hot. On trigger, pressurised fog fluid is forced through it and vaporises instantly. Because the exchanger is already at temperature, the system discharges within seconds instead of waiting to warm up — and in security fog, that is the single most critical parameter.
3. Dispersion
On contact with room-temperature air the vapour condenses into microscopic droplets and fills the volume rapidly. The density scatters light, which is why a torch or phone light is useless inside the fog — it actually makes things worse. Nozzle direction and height are set during installation so the fog reaches the priority area first.
4. Hold time and clearing
The fog holds for a period that depends on the volume and the ventilation. Well-sealed enclosed spaces extend it; open doors and forced ventilation shorten it. Once cleared it leaves no residue on surfaces, because the fluid is water-based and contains no oil.
What the system is made of
- Generator body: the main unit housing the heat exchanger, control board and nozzle.
- Fluid cartridge: replaceable, with capacity varying by model.
- Control interface: arming, isolation and status indication.
- Battery backup: keeps the system armed through a mains failure.
- Alarm interface: trigger and status lines back to your existing panel.
How it differs from a conventional alarm
When a burglar alarm activates, two things happen: a siren sounds and a signal goes to a monitoring centre. Then everyone waits. That wait — processing the signal, dispatching a team, travelling, arriving — is at best a few minutes in most cities. Yet the majority of smash-and-grab burglaries are finished in under two minutes. The gap between those two numbers is your loss.
Security fog closes that gap. The alarm still reports; the fog simultaneously stops the intruder finishing the job. The two are not competitors — they are complementary layers.
Security fog does not replace an alarm system. Without an alarm the fog cannot be triggered; without fog the alarm only reports. The right design has both working together.
Where it is used
Security fog makes sense anywhere value density is high and response time is long: jewellers and exchange offices, ATMs and bank branches, retail stores, warehouses and logistics hubs, offices and server rooms, pharmacies, empty homes and cargo vehicles. Because volume, partitioning and ventilation differ in every space, the right model can only be determined by an on-site survey.
